Tinderuta Jotunheimen
Tinderuta Jotunheimen is a ski tour through Western Jotunheimen, from Fondsbu to Turtagrø, established as a more snow-secure alternative to the Høgruta Jotunheimen. This tour is for skiers who want to experience Norway’s wildest high mountain landscape with great turns in untouched snow. Along the way, we aim for beautiful 2000-meter peaks, and we plan the route so that we find good and safe snow.
During the tour, we visit five cabins, all of which are very charming. Most of them are staffed and offer high-standard food and lodging. We start at Fondsbu, visit the self-serviced Olavsbu, then head to Leirvassbu and Krossbu, and we finish the last day with a ski tour in Hurrungane from Turtagrø.
It is important to be aware that the weather and avalanche risk in Jotunheimen are variable. The tour description above assumes favorable conditions. Breogfjell will always adjust the route and the tour according to the conditions, and guests must be prepared for changes in the route in case of bad weather or avalanche risks.
Tinderuta day by day
Day 0 – Meeting at Fondsbu with dinner at 7:00 PM. There is a snowcat service from Tyin, which must be booked privately. This evening, we get to know each other and the tour ahead, go through critical equipment and clothing, and plan the next day.
Day 1 – After breakfast and packing lunch, we head to Olavsbu. Along the way, we aim for Mjølkedalstinden (2138 m), possibly also passing Høgbrothøgde (1821 m). Olavsbu is a self-service cabin, so we will have a quiet evening and prepare dinner ourselves.
Day 2 – From Olavsbu, we continue to Leirvassbu, possibly summiting one or more beautiful ski mountains that combine well with a smooth flow. Options include Skardalstinden (2100 m) and Midtre Høgvagltinden (2066 m). A delicious dinner awaits us at Leirvassbu in good company.
Day 3 – From Leirvassbu, we enjoy a spectacular day in glacier terrain on our way to Krossbu. We aim to visit Storebjørn (2222 m), before crossing Bjørneskaret to Leirbrean. There, we find several options for fine alpine ski mountains, such as Sokse (2189 m), Skeie (2118 m), and Kalven (2034 m), before descending toward Krossbu.
Day 4 – From Krossbu, the journey continues up to Sognefjellet and the ski peaks Steindalsnosi (2029 m) and Fanaråkken (2068 m). One good combination is to start with Steindalsnosi and finish the day with a 1100-meter descent from Fanaråkken to Turtagrø via Helgedalen. Here, we are served perhaps the best meal of the trip in a setting rich with mountaineering history.
Day 5 – Tinderuta ends in the cradle of Norwegian mountain sports: Hurrungane! We head toward Ringstind, the most classic ski summit in the area, before gliding down Ringsdalen to conclude our adventurous journey.
Please note that changes to the daily plans may occur due to weather, snow conditions, avalanche risks, and group capacity. If the weather and/or snow conditions is bad, or any participants have problems, it is possible to choose to go all or part of the stages along marked ski trails in the valleys or alternative routes.
Highly qualified guides
All Breogfjell Mountain Guides are qualified IFMGA Mountain Guides (called “Tindevegledere” in Norwegian) or approved in Norway by Norsk Fjellsportforum. They also know the area like their own pocket. For ski mountaineering we only use IFMGA certified guides or aspirant guides.
Accommodation and Meals
During the tour, we stay in both staffed and self-serviced mountain huts. Accommodation is in shared rooms or dormitories. You should be able to carry about 2 liters of drinking water during the hiking days. If you enjoy having hot drinks on the daily stages, you can refill your thermos at the huts.
Travel and Transport
You will need to arrange your own transport to Fondsbu the evening before the tour begins. Check jbv.no for bus schedules. Transportation from Turtagrø to Tyinkrysset after the tour is included in the package.
